The controversy in medicinal marijuana is investigated. The research question that drives this paper is the effects of medicinal marijuana on patients, where personal view or opinion do not take part in. Both sides of the controversy were considered with most discussed topics supported by two scientific experiments for each claim. Two experiments that strengthened the claim were: an experiment on a specific tumor cell (glioma) incubated with cannabinoids, and another experiment where the analgesic effect of synergistic interaction between cannabinoids and opioids was investigated. On the other hand, the counterclaim had: a discovery of alterations of brain tissue, and various symptoms that correlates with the intake of THC and cannabidol. …show more content…
A study used 16 healthy male volunteers, and never defined the word “healthy”. Despite the fact that the study did not concretely define “healthy” and its controlled variables within the male volunteers, and the fact that it had small sample size, the results could still be discussed. The male volunteers were administered with 10mg of THC and 600mg of CBD at three consecutive intervals in one month period, and physiological effects and symptom ratings were measured 1, 2, and 3 hours post-administration (Martin-Santos, Crippa and Batalla). The results showed that in relative to the effects of CBD, the effects of THC on the volunteers were anxiety, disphoria, positive psychotic symptoms, physical and mental sedation, subjective intoxication and an increase in heart rate (Martin-Santos, Crippa and Batalla). In conclusion, although THC showed harmful and unwanted effects on the healthy volunteers, CBD proved itself that it is safe to be …show more content…
The two claims that supported the use of medicinal marijuana all showed great potential as cannabinoid being used therapeutically because the experiment that they conducted focused on one specific area, which in turn provided great detail and significance of its data and results. The unfortunate negative aspect of such experiments was that it is impossible to see how such experiment will fit into the whole picture where all kinds of side effects, and changes in complex human body are possible. On the other hand, the experiments conducted to counterclaim lacked detail, but pointed out a weakness that claim could not have mentioned. Therefore, medicinal marijuana should never be fully condoned until all the problems have been proven, as people who are in need of medical help will be taking medicinal marijuana over various other
