Dr. Sally Satel, MD. is a private researcher who publishes multiple articles on e-cigarettes and their benefit on society. In her 2014 article titled 'How E-Cigarettes Could Save Lives ' posted in the Washington Post, she goes into a lot of detail on the subject. One of the most important lines from the entire article states, “E-cigarettes, however, could be what we need to knock the U.S. smoking rate from a stubborn 18 percent to the government’s goal of 12 percent by 2020. We should not only tolerate them but encourage their use”. From an outsider standpoint, should a person know nothing about e-cigarettes, this number would be getting them thinking. Traditional cigarettes are very limiting on that option, because if a person wanted a weaker cigarette they would simply buy a worse brand. However, there can be more risks because the manufacturer would need to put in a different chemical to keep the person hooked and buying their cigarettes if the nicotine amount is not enough. Unlike the FDA approved cigarette regulations, the American E-Liquid Manufacturing Standards Association (AEMSA) has their own set of standards that are available for public viewing. The FDA approved cigarette regulation documents is basically a legal document. It ensures that if there are any complications that a person has from smoking cigarettes does not come back an negatively impact the FDA. They care about covering themselves.
