students can greatly benefit from using social networking sites. "Simply going on Facebook is teaching your teenager to use the internet to their advantage" (Gerber 11). For starters, Universities are creating Facebook pages and allowing kids to commit through early admission programs. these programs help students transition smoothly as they make the giant, intimidating high school to college leap. The pages also give incoming students an opportunity to get a taste for what campus activities they will encounter as well as taking away the initial shock most face when attending school making them more comfortable and confident. Secondly, social networking enables kids to have access to more studying opportunities with peers. George middle school in Portland Oregon conducted an experiment in which they introduced social networking sites in class to discuss educational topics. they found that grades went up by fifty percent, absents went down by thirty-three percent, and twenty percent of students completed optional extra credit assignments( …show more content…
Social media affects nearly every aspect of life and it generates and recirculates a lot of money into the economy. In 2011, social media ad revenue reached the 5 billion dollar mark and in 2012 increased forty-three percent to 8.8 billion dollars. Networking sites also impacts the freelance economy by providing more productive work, an increase in human capitol, and driving the growth of the freelance economy. Social networking provides more productive work for freelancers, self-employed workers, because there is an opportunity to build trust through mutual connections and when the trust has been transferred to the working world buyers and sellers are both interested in reaching a job done well. Through the growth of social media more and more freelancers have found work online. In order to be recognized by different people for more work, they are given the incentive to invest in their own human capital and get more schooling, licenses, other certifications. Social media will also drive the growth of the freelance economy because when others have success they will turn to social media to express their success and when others see their success they will be likely to follow
