The four anthems were composed for the coronation of King George II. Each anthem had texts taken out of the Bible. The four anthems were The King Shall Rejoice, My Heart is Inditing, Let thy Hand be Strengthened, and Zadok the Priest. Zadok the Priest was the most popular, and now has played at every British coronation since then!
It is hard to describe the elements in the anthem. Zadok the Priest has exerts taken out of the Bible and put into the lyrics. I am not a professional when it comes to evaluating music, but I do know that the melody, harmony, and rhythm are all in tune. The beginning of the anthem starts out slow and start moving faster until the whole choir comes in. I believe that the message of the Handel was to have a very upbeat song, which it is. Numerous times the choir, says “Rejoice!” and I believe that makes it a very happy and cheerful song.
I absolutely loved this anthem. It was very beautifully written and beautifully sang, especially by the choir of Westminster Abbey. Hearing this anthem makes me feel very patriotic, and I would absolutely love to hear it in person. The personal meaning I mostly take from hearing this anthem is patriotism. In America, I come from a very patriotic family, so hearing this anthem makes me feel very happy towards the country of England.
