Meanings, both literal and inferential, must be made from texts in order to effectively read the texts of today and the future. Meaning making requires readers to draw upon code breaking resources as well as their meaning maker resources including previous social, cultural and reading experiences (Anstey, 2002). Whether or not a text is linear can greatly affect they way that meanings are made. Texts have become increasingly nonlinear due to the internet and social media. Rather than reading strictly left to right, top to bottom, beginning to end (linear), such as in many English books, the internet has allowed reading to be nonlinear through the use of links and other texts on webpages. The idea of genre is introduced in meaning maker practices in relation to previous reading experiences and meanings taken from texts can be influenced by the context in which the reading takes place. Connections are easier to make and information is easier to understand if the reader is familiar with the type of text genre (Anstey, 2002). All texts are social products constructed to shape and convey ideologies (Anstey, 2002). These ideologies are created by authors through the manipulation of variables, including as point of view, in order to position the reader a certain way (Green & Cochrane, 2003). Readers must be able to understand how texts and genres work to understand how they have been constructed and who benefits from their construction (Anstey, 2002). In order to successfully analyse texts critically, the reader must also have a thorough understanding of previous practices. It is important to question and analyse text content on the internet and social media, as there are many texts trying to manipulate readers to view things certain ways. Even comments made by other users on social media sites are manipulated to position reads to read the original text in a certain
