The Glass Menagerie
1. How do economic circumstances affect the actions of Tom, Laura, and Amanda?
Tom: The way economic circumstances affected Tom is that he seems to be the only two of the three member in the family to earn money. It is clear that they’re not in a great financial situation and Tom is doing what he can to earn money in a shoe factory. However, you can tell that Tom is not happy being in the shoe factory. When he seems to be home, he always look so tired and just stressed out a lot. There was one point that he seem to be writing on a piece a paper just to escape reality but he can’t focus because of Amanda. Tom usually get into arguments with Amanda and head out to “movies” for adventure.

The reason why because this story is based on the Tom’s memories and how “he” sees the situation. Before the play started, Tom state how that this play is just a memory and how it is very sentimental and not realistic to him. In the story, Tom and Amanda got into arguments a lot with money, going to movies, and finding a husband for Laura. So based on that interaction, their relationship is not great. I feel that when he told the story about Amanda about her past, sure I feel that Amanda’s story is true but Tom could be just missing important facts or misinterpreting her words.
3. Where do you think Tom is going when he says he goes to the movies? Explain your answer.
I strongly feel that he is seeing a marine recruiter. There was a scene where Amanda was talking to Tom on how she is scared that he will end up like her father. She also mentioned about how she saw the letter Tom got from the merchant Marine. I mean this is not explicitly stated but it is a possibly. Tom always talk about how he craze for adventure and want to escape the apartment. Tom doesn’t like working at his job in the shoe factory and would like to do something else that would fuel him with excitement so this is going to be the most likely outcome.
