His ability to lead men in war was exceptional and he was able to adapt to disastrous situations for the best of his men. Historians still agree that Alexander’s strategies and skill make him “an outstanding military leader.” (Speilvogel et. la. pg. 92) His kingdom was large and methodical and the people were pleased with this success. Women later on gained more political rights, mostly those from the upper class, were able to manage their property and money and some even owned land of their own. This was a big change for women that empowered and gave hope to all people alike. The Hellenistic Kingdom was very fond of Greek culture and began to give the people Greek inspired core values and ways of life because of its value in the empire. The kingdom had gymnasiums controlled by a “gymnasiarch” and even schools were built for the males but this was even “unusual for their time.” (Speilvogel et. la. pg.100) An important value to the people was their culture and the Greeks were influential and valued, leading to developments in art, literature and influential philosophers, along with science and medical improvements. la. pg. 165) This philosophy quickly transferred to the Severan rulers, and the brothers went on to create a powerful and corrupt army that were well paid but who’s power, was greatly over used. This in turn caused military anarchy as well as economic and social crisis within the Roman Empire. “Invasions, civil wars, and recurrence of the plague” were critical events that caused the empire to fail in power and lose its vitality. (Speilvogel et. la. pg. 166) The military’s power began to drop due to the lack of money, so the kingdom began hiring barbarians to do the job with lower pay. Although inflation played a large part in the economic plunder, the military had become the center of Roman power and they were no longer supporting their people. The Governors were even below the military so there was little they could do to serve justice within the kingdom. In this time, it was difficult for the people to express their ideas and live in a unified empire that supported their values. In past empires, military was strong and all was well, but in this kingdom they were given to much power and didn’t reach out to the people or their culture, instead they pushed it away and applied only their own values and ideas.
