The Romans were the most successful ancient civilization. First, they had conquered many countries with their armies. Next, they had a great Roman Republic. But finally, they had breathtaking architecture. We can still see the buildings that have been around, today.

The Romans had the best military, and to prove this they had many great wars conquering Egypt and Greece. Like in c. 146 BC the Roman Republic fought a battle against the Greece city of Corinth. This was the battle when Rome took over Greece in 146 BC. The Romans started to rule over Egypt when Octavian (Augustus Caesar) arrived in 30 BC following his defeat in the battle of Actium. Our government today in the United States is somewhat based off of the Roman government. It began when they fought against the Etruscans in 509 B.C.E. The Etruscans ruled over the Romans for 66 years. After the Romans were free from the Etruscans they started a Republic, which is a government that the citizens get to elect representatives to rule on their behalf.

A Republic is different than a democracy, which means every citizen was expected to have a job in governing the state. The aristocracy had dominated the Roman Republic. The aristocracy were also known as patricians. They were the wealthy high class people. The highest positions in the government were the two consuls, or leaders, who ruled over the Roman Republic. Not just that, but the Roman were innovators and they adopted new materials, construction techniques and with those two together combined the older techniques with the creative design made a whole new range of breathtaking architecture. Examples of this are basilica, triumphal arch, massive aqueducts, amphitheaters with great sound. The Romans wanted this because it was for theater and they wanted everyone to hear the voices. They also included granary building, and the housing for the residents. These were responses to the changing practical needs of the Roman Society. These projects were all backed by a state apparatus that organized, funded, and spread them around the Roman World. This guarantee their permanence so they could last to the present
