Having this Boulerterion shows that there is a judicial system that this civilization had. The Boulerterion originated in Greece which adds to the evidence that this city was influenced by the Greek culture (humanitieslab.stanford.edu). It appears that the Boulerterion is also built in a stadium setting meaning that there were public trials that took place. Having this set up could also mean that there could have been a jury that was run by the citizens. It was popular back then for people who lived in the community to partake in the lawful decision making. It is important for civilizations to have a judicial system because it helps keep the community organized and at peace. There have been many ancient civilizations that have had a set of laws that they must abide by, for example, Hammurabi’s Code of Laws. These were laws that were put in place by the Babylonian ruler from 1792 to 1750 BCE. For each law, there was a consequence for if the law was broken. For example, “If any one ensnare another, putting a ban upon him, but he can not prove it, then he that ensnared him shall be put to death (Hammurabi’s Code of Laws).” Just like the Babylonians, this culture must have had laws and consequences that would be put in place if they were broken for this is what the Boulerterion was used for. Another more relatable example is the Twelve Tables. The Twelve Tables were another set of laws put in place by the Romans. An example of a law from the Twelve Tables is “If a father sells his son three times, the son shall be free from his father.” This rule slightly shows how the Romans operated back during these times. These laws were separated into twelve parts each having their own set of rules. The Romans government was called the Roman Republic and the laws that they followed were the Twelve Tables that I spoke about above. Having laws creates a sense of humanity in culture
