Play allows for children to be creative and figure out what they like to do and do not like to do. Children need that time after school to be bored so they can use their creativity to figure out what they want to do. Iff they come home from school everyday and their afternoons are already planned and booked for them they don 't get that time to do what they want to do. Teachers are hired to teach, things like the ABC’s, how to write your name, how to add and subtract things like that. That is one main reason elementary students have recess throughout their days, because play is important. There is direct correlation between recess and academic performance, “countries where they actually have more recess tend to have higher academic performance than countries where recess is less” ( qtd inhttp://www.npr.org/sections/ed/2014/08/06/336361277/scientists-say-childs-play-helps-build-a-better-brain). While schools do give recess and that is helping with the play aspect of a children 's life they need more than just 1 hour a day. If every day children come home and are doing homework, that is taking away from their play time. At this age, engaging in play is much more beneficial than homework, so there should not be any homework assigned at these grade levels. It is a parent 's job to teach their kids how to share, how to be a good friend, how to be a good person overall. When a lot of a parent 's time with their children is dedicated to homework they are giving up their time to teach the the things they are responsible for. Also, they would have significantly more time to do things that are actually important such as extracurricular activities, playing outside, getting to bed at a decent time and things like that. If everyday students have between 20 minutes and a hour worth of homework they are left with less time to do other things. A lot of time students are engaged in at least one extracurricular
