The role of law in digital copyright is to ensure that the integrity of people’s work is upheld by ensuring their created content is not accessed nor distributed illegally. In the cases where copyright is infringed then it is the role of the law to ensure that the correct punishment is administered to the person or group that has committed the violation.

Over the past decade, piracy has experienced a sharp rise to prominence. Statistics show that 54% of Australians aged 18-24 have pirated copyrighted movies and TV shows (Australian Home Entertainment Distributors Association). Piracy has swept the world with hosting websites garnering over fifty-billion views annually, causing economic losses totalling in the billions as a result (Online Piracy in Numbers). They distribute information, advice and education regarding copyright law and its application. Furthermore, they attempt to lobby for law reform in an attempt to defend creator 's rights but also to balance the needs between the creators and consumers.
A recent example of action undertaken by the Australian Copyright Council is a submission to the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee on the Copyright Amendment (Online Infringement Bill, 2015). This report outline the organisation 's standing on a recent copyright bill passed through the senate. Through a thorough examination of the bill, the ACC gives the senate a brief conclusion on the organisation’s stance. In this case the ACC said that they support the bill in principle, however, expressed concern at the effect of procedural matters on the bill’s effectiveness.
