Despite deterrence being a strong strategy in keeping our sovereignty, another method used by Singapore is Diplomacy. Diplomacy is how a country maintain relations between one another. Diplomacy is mainly used to create peace and common interest without any conflicts (Marshall Cavendish Education, 2013).
A quote from an article shows an example of how Singapore handles diplomacy. “Our defense relations with China are excellent, and we acknowledge China’s desire to play a peaceful and constructive role in this region,” (Gady, 2015), which was quoted from Singapore’s Minister of Defense Ng Eng Hen during his speech in front of the parliament. This shows Singapore applying diplomacy to get ties to promote peace and good will between countries.

By having a strong arsenal of weaponry and a top notch fleet, coupled with well – trained soldiers conscripted from National Service, it ensures that Singapore has a defense which is strong enough to act as a deterrence to any potential attackers or invaders, trying to infringe on our Sovereignty. National Service and spending on military defense works hand-in-hand with each other. As mentioned earlier, Singapore is a small country, what we lack manpower we would make, would be covered with sheer advance in technology. The money is used to obtain the strongest and most updated military gear. However, National Service is still required, as soldiers are required to be well-versed with their arsenal of artillery. Either is unable to function without each
