All of these new advancements without a doubt make it easier for President Blank to deal with foreign policy matters in 2017. In our current time, political leaders are just a phone call or email away, where telegrams seemed to be the main communication device during President Kennedy’s time. Telegrams could take days to receive and respond to, so clearly 2017 has the advantage in communication. During the Cuban Missile Crisis President John Kennedy and Former Prime Minister Nikita Khrushchev would go back and forth for days, via telegram, which today is not even an option. All President Blank has to do is pick up the phone, and it is that easy. The level of technology during the Cold War made it much more difficult for President Kennedy, compared to the technology available in 2017. It is so much easier to gain information on another powerful country with a strong military and economy (great power) just because of the constant evolving of technology (K&B, pp. 17). Media is something that has also gown sine the 1960s, but has just as many disadvantages as advantages. Since the media wasn’t that huge during Kenendys presidency he was able to hide the problems with Cuba and the Soviet Union, a mutual deep hatred leading these actors to feud (enduring rivalries) (K&B, pp. 509).During the Cuban Missile Crisis Kennedy was able to keep the potential nuclear war a secret all the way from October 15th to October …show more content…
Liberalism is based on the hope that universal ethics, along with the application of reason in international relations can lead to a better world (K&B, pp. 98). Liberals focus more on cooperation, maintaining peace, interests of the United States and allies and a lot of other aspects that realism does not take into consideration. Another key characteristic of liberalism, is the fact that military force is not the only significant instrument of foreign policy (M2, ss2, s5). The world today is so much different from what it was in the late 1960s, therefore a liberalist perspective would be good for our country. President Blank along with other global institutions would attempt to work together and focus on all people in all states. Realism wouldn’t necessarily be a bad option for President Blank, it just wouldn’t be very applicable in 2017. This theoretical perspective is based on the fact that world politics is essentially a struggle among self-interested states for power and position (M2, ss1, s2). Realists see this as a “dog eat dog world”, where cooperation is rare, and leaders take care of their own state first before anything else. Working with other nations is very important, therefore a realist perspective would not quit fit. A central concept of realism is to be interdependent and to only rely on self to
