Despite how identity affects a students ' perspective of themselves and others, the concept might not enter the students ' thoughts as frequently as it should. Students need to start thinking about how different aspects of their lives influences theme. Culture has a massive influence over students. Students come from various backgrounds. Some students might come from households that passionately celebrate their culture, while other students might not. However, as Gill, Lin, and Purru state about culture and being white: “Your cultural difference is not so visible or audible… It is not just your appearance…. students from a multitude of cultures may not be as immersed in culture as other students are”. As the authors go on to say, even students with ancestors from various European countries can still celebrate their culture. Culture, if students celebrate it or not, has importance over students ' concept of their own identity. As a teacher, I hope to use this overarching concept to help students discover their own cultural idea. To do this, I plan on starting the concept with a unit on cultural identity. I plan on starting the class with a poem by Sherman Alexie called "Evolution". The poem combines folklore students may already be aware of with modernized ideas. This poem will also work to introduce the students to Sherman Alexie. I plan on educating
