The Public Health Agency identified mental health as a major public health challenge in United State and is a priority for the Government. It is estimated, that every year, one in five America experiences a mental illness. Furthermore, one in three American experience a mental health issue within their lifetime.
Positive mental health and well-being is a crucial dimension of overall health, it contributes to our quality of life and to our ability to enjoy life. Good mental health in work environment is the foundation of a healthy society and healthy economy as it is associated with better physical health outcomes, improved educational attainment, increased economic participation, and rich social relationships.

The Branch also collects data on suicide and self-inflicted injuries. The surveillance data is used inform priorities, to assist in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of public health interventions and programs.
Moreover, the Branch recently developed a Positive Mental Health Surveillance Indicator Framework, to provide a picture of the state of positive mental health as well as the risk and protective factors at the individual, family, community and societal level in American. Data from this surveillance framework will be used to inform programs and policies to improve the mental health of American in the workplace.
The workplace can play an essential part in maintaining positive mental health. However, the workplace can also have negative impacts on the mental wellbeing of individuals. The Division is currently supporting actions to advance knowledge on workplace mental health and to prevent psychological injuries in the workplace.
