Overall, John tries to convince readers with his 1st hand experience that Jesus is filled with the presence of God and on a mission as the Messiah, to which he tries to make the Jewish people believe in him. Jesus tried to show that he had the power of God by performing seven major signs to reveal his glory given by god. The Jewish people did not believe Jesus had the power to heal and do wonders like that of God, but he managed to prove them wrong numerous times. The first sign performed by Jesus was at a wedding in Cana when the wine supply was empty. Servers were told to obey Jesus, and he told them “Fill the jars [six stone water jugs that could hold 20-30 gallons] with water…Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter. ‘When the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine…’” (JN 2:7-9). Only the servers Jesus had commanded and his disciples knew that this was an act from the Messiah. The disciples began to believe in Jesus after they witnessed a feat as sudden as this. The first example of this came when John explained how Jesus handled the situation on the Bread of Life, because the people wanted to see a sign from him. The 5000 people that wanted a sign from Jesus wanted to be given vast amounts of bread every day, which Jesus already knew they wanted, and he told them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst… for this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life…” (JN 6:35-40). Jesus used the ‘I am’ phrase in this statement he gave to the people asking for bread, which is a phrase God used many times in the Old Testament. This is significant for Jesus to use because no other person dares to speak like that of God, but Jesus speaks in this manner to prove that he comes straight from God. Yet, Jesus acted like God again when he was speaking to Martha about the death of Lazarus when he said, “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die…” (JN 11:25-26). In this statement, Jesus is stating that if people believe in God, then their spirit will live on for eternity. For Jesus is trying to tell Martha not to fear for Lazarus’ life because if he believed in God then he shall never
