According to Bloomsbury International (2014), “Approximately one new word is added to the English language every two hours and around four thousand new words are added to the English dictionary every year.” Language is a way for people to communicate with those around them, sharing notions and conventions of those from the same cultural backgrounds and spreading this so others can learn (Corder, 2013). With this in mind, Australia has its own variety of English; Standard Australian English is the official language given to the English spoken and written in this country (McGrath, 2016). It is the language used in formal settings such as; universities, schools, governments, dictionaries, and style and grammar guides. This formal way of the English language originated when the French introduced the French and Latin languages in Great Britain; these words came with the connotation of nobility and authority that still exist today (Gardoqui). These language origins created a more sophisticated form of English, which is still used today by the institutions above (Delbridge, 1999). Delbridge (1999) discusses that these establishments each have their own style and grammar guides that need to be followed in order for the English used to be correct and accepted. The Macquarie Dictionary was first published in 1981 and was written to assist in the pronunciation, spelling, and definitions of all words, thus creating a guide for those words of Australian English (Delbridge, 1999).
