To begin, the American Dream is slowly becoming a thing in the past because of the unlawful decisions made by corporations. At one point everyone started off nowhere but now, with hard anyone can achieve success in America or so they think. During the 2004 Keynote Address for the Democratic National Convention, President Obama states “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” (78). In agreement with President Obama, I can support the fact that all men are created equal. We are citizens of the United States and with that the responsibility is to support life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. But Americans have come across problems with inequality and injustice. For instance, if an employee speaks out about the company that they work for, then he/she could risk the possibility of losing their job and in today 's world it is almost impossible for one to live without a steady income. Studs Terkel explains the injustice that occurs and majority of the population does not know about it. During the interview with Acuna, he stated “They (corporations) treat him like a farm implement. In fact, they treat their implements better and their domestic animals better. They have heat and insulated barns for the animals but the workers live in beat-up shacks with no heat at all” (75). The American Dream is not all about becoming rich, but also having a secure job and a company that you can trust to have your back when you are in need. Randy Omark and Cherie Morris of Stroudsburg, PA., were former flight attendants for TWA. After the buyout in the late 1990s by American Airlines both workers were laid off after working 26 years with the airline. Today, Despite having a college education, both work for less than $9 an hour. The injustice that is represented in this situation shows the unlawful decisions that is presented to the workers that have been with the company for over 26 years. After 26 years with the company, Randy and Cherie still have to face immoral decisions made to better the company instead of doing the ethical thing. When living in America, one should not be frightened to lose a job after working more than 2 decades with the same company. Yet, American businesses tend to make decisions based on what is best for their shareholders and investors, not what is best for their employees. Consequently to all the actions that major corporations have made, many people are forced to downsize their dreams to fit into their job and surroundings. In effect, this does not give people a chance to become successful and live the American Dream. People live in America for a reason, in the past
