Loftus and Pickrell (2003) did an experiment on ages effect on memory. The aim was to investigate a person’s ability to create false memories about events from childhood. 120 people participated in the study, there were 4 conditions. Group 1: read a fake Disney Advert with no cartoon characters. Group 2: read a fake ad with no cartoon characters, but were exposed to a cardboard figure of Bugs Bunny (BB) placed in the interview room. Group 3: read the fake advert referring to BB. Group 4: read the fake advert featuring BB and were exposed to the cardboard cutout of BB. The results were that in group 3 30% of the participants and 40% of the participants in group 4 remembered meeting Bugs Bunny. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of schema on memory recall. The participants read a Native American Story called War of the Ghosts and then were asked to recall it as exactly as possible. There were 2 different types of reproduction serial and repeated reproduction. In serial reproduction, a participant was asked to write down what they remembered of the story, then they would have to read their version to another participant and that participant would write down what they remember and so on. In repeated reproduction, the participant was asked to write down what they remembered 5 - 6 times with time gaps so from 15 min to several years. The results were the same for both types of reproduction, the stories become shorter and more concise over time. Some words become more culturally specific for example instead of canoe it would be changed to boat. Not only does this show that our memory gets distorted over time but it also shows that culture can influence the way we remember. Memory distortion leads to memory becoming unreliable as some facts that we remembered might not of even happened or are just
