Many great artists were born or raised there. Florence had 100,00 residents and was dominated by the Medicis, a wealthy family. The Medicis housed great artists, poets, and thinkers. People came from all around the world to do business, study art, or learn at schools or libraries. They brought good ideas, goods, and technologies that enlightened the city. Florentines were inspired by the freedom of ideas that that were at the core of humanism.
