“Land of the free”, “American dream“, “land of opportunity“, and all similar phrases of promotion give the impression that America is place where opportunity is limitless. We give certain things meaning separate from their purpose. Consumers are continually spending regardless of how much they already possess. We have fallen into a social norm where the “luxuries of today are the necessities of tomorrow.” This obsession has created the change of the “needs” factor into “wants”.
Scapegoating is one reason this problem still exists. No one wants to take accountability or responsibility for what is happening -- everyone is pointing the finger at one another. Both sides of the political spectrum blame each other for the results of today.
Social Structure- we all feel it is more important to be successful, to have nice things, yet we never have enough, always want to consume more while never being content with what we have. All this drive us to sacrifice the most important things in life, such as family, friends and enjoying life in general.
