The earliest known record of criminal law was written by King Hammurabi in Babylonia during his reign in 1790 B.C. and was named The Code of Hammurabi; many of our legal concepts and procedures can be traced back to the code. Our laws had other influences from around the world that helped shape it such as English Jurisprudence, Roman Law, as well as French and Spanish legal concepts.
The first law was brought when Columbus came to the United States in 1492 and was called compacts which were based off of the common law of England. Since they wanted and needed to make modifications to the law due to the political issues that arose because these were the same laws that they tried to escape from when coming to America and they didn’t fit into the lives that had created here. Once the colonies had established themselves after the signing of the Declaration of Independence many kept the common law while others either didn’t or made their own criminal statutes. Because the times are ever changing though it means there’s more ways people try to get around old laws that are still in place and the nature of crimes continues to grow and they really do get pretty grisly and ruthless now where as they weren’t so inhumane I believe back when colonies were still around and around times of
