In the history of the united states nothing has brought more shame to America than the cold years of chattel slavery. Slavery can be defined as an inhumane action done to an individual or group of people that causes either physical or mental harm. The movie “Roots”, tells about the life of an enslaved African male named Kunta Kinte or Toby. Kunta was born in 1750 and he was 17 when he was captured and Brought to America as a slave on a ship called Lord Ligonier. During this time, the Middle Passage was preposterous there were 10.7 million slaves that survived the dreaded Middle Passage, disembarking in North America (Gates Jr.). In the movie Roots there were several instances in the movie were Kunta really missed his homeland. He told his friend Fiddler what he would be doing if he was still in Africa this made Fiddler cry and want to run away and get to Africa. Kunta really missed his homeland so much and was so true to himself that they pushed him to the point where he was being beat and still refused to accept the name Toby. So what they did was tied him to a tree and told all the slaves on the plantation to come bear witness of what was going to be done to Kunta for escaping and for refusing to be called Toby. They did this to put fear into the other slaves so they would know if they tried this ,it would happened to them. Fiddler was not kind to Kunta at first, because he did not really want the responsibility of a 100% african slave, trying to convert him into a slave that listens to the white man. Master Walker thought Fiddler could get through to kunta because of the privileges he had. Fiddler could use liquor for medicinal reasons, eating in the big house, and sleeping on a wood floor in the big house. Fiddler would lose his privileges if he did not succeed so he becomes mentor to Kunta, but all kunta wanted he wanted is to escape and go back to his home and to be free. At the end he tried to run but finds himself lost and tired and gets recaptured. When he is brought back to the plantation and at this point Master Walker was fed up with toby so he gave Fiddler’s job to the overseer and he broke
