Prior to the time of the Missouri compromise, there were an equal number of slave states to free states thus there was an equal balance of power in congress. Once Missouri had applied for admission into the union there was instant disapproval from the northern territories for they had thought that the south already had a substantial amount of power. The Missouri compromise was a way to balance congress of free and slave states. The compromise itself was passed in 1820 giving Missouri the title of a slave state and Maine the title of a free state. Therefore it settled a rising dispute between the slave and free territories.…
Many political issues had detrimental effects that caused the Civil War. One of those issues being the Missouri Compromise, which took place in 1820. The reasoning behind the Missouri compromise was due to the South feeling that since the North had gained Maine, as a free state, that the political power would be much stronger than it would be in the South. Therefore, Missouri was to become a slave state, which then also created the cutoff line for free and slave states. The Missouri compromise was not a problem that was solved quickly, the entire process took about two years to solve.…
The Missouri Compromise divided the nation into two separate parts, free or slave states. Popular sovereignty allowed the states to choose whether or not they would be free. As read in the text, “What then we do insist on, is, not to extend slavery, but that we shall not be prohibited from immigrating with our property, into the Territories of the United States” (Document 8). The South wanted to bring slavery with them and believed they had the right to do so. Although, in the North it was decided that slavery would be abolished and they would all be free states.…
Missouri was well known for its slavery in the 1800s. If the Missouri Compromise didn’t happen, it was of changed the United States today greatly. The Missouri Compromise accomplished making Missouri a slave state and changing Maine into a free state because it wanted to be separated from Massachusetts. There were 22 states at the time equally divided into 11 slave states and 11 free slave states. There was chaos when the Missouri compromise was made, so they made Maine a free of slave state to even out the states.…
the Union from the Northwest Territory. Missouri, which was obtained through the Louisiana Purchase, requested for admission as a slave state only contributed to the fears that slavery was expanding northward. Representative of New York, James Tallmadge, Jr., proposed two amendments to the Missouri statehood bill in 1819. First, it proposed the prohibition of any further slaves into Missouri. Secondly, he proposed the gradual emancipation for slaves currently there.…
Luckily, the Civil War was delayed due to various settlements between political parties regarding slavery- such as the Missouri Compromise, Compromise of 1850, and the Kansas-Nebraska Act. The Missouri Compromise of 1820 was proposed by Representative Henry Clay from Kentucky. Clay came up with this after Missouri demanded to become a state, which would have upset the existing balance among free and slave states. The compromise resulted in Missouri admitted as a slave state and Maine carved out of Massachusetts as a free state.…
This dispute led to secession and the secession ultimately led to war, in which the Northern states and territories fought to preserve the Union, and the South fought to establish Southern independence as a new confederation of states under its own constitution. Dred Scott was a slave who sought citizenship through the American Legal System, and whose case eventually ended up in the Supreme Court. Scott was denied his request, stating that no person with African blood could become a U.S. citizen. Besides just denying citizenship for African Americans, it also overturned the Missouri Compromise of 1820, which had restricted slavery in certain U.S. territories.…
But serval members of congress from the north objected this. There were 11 slave’s states and 11 Free states. By adding Missouri there would be an increase in slave state and the power of southern states senate. The Missouri compromise was signed in to law 1820. The Missouri compromise had two main points; Missouri would be allowed slavery and Maine will be part of free state Which will balance the power of north and south.…
The expansion of the western frontier resulted in events that encouraged the disunity of the Nation due to sectionalism. The north and the south always had conflict about social, political and economic issues. Slavery was one of the biggest conflicts between the north and south. Once land was obtained in the west there was a debate on whether they should be slave states or free states. Henry Clay tried to fix this problem with the Missouri Compromise which allowed for one slave state and one free state to enter the union at the same time.…
The most controversial topic preceding and following the ratification of the United States Constitution was states’ rights. Additionally, the distribution of a state’s power ultimately determines the variability of laws and standards throughout a nation. With an incredibly visible divide between northern and southern states on whether slavery should be permitted in the 1770s-1860s, states’ rights became an inevitable conflict. States’ rights were more concerning for states with large slave populations because of the dependency on slave labor for economic benefits. Although there were several prominent figures who opposed slavery, such as Thomas…

In the late 18th century, the Constitution of the United States was ratified and the unification of the union along with it. Although the Constitution was created to produce order and unity, the nation was split into two by the mid-19th century. After a vast amount of territories being brought into the union due to the nation 's’ Manifest Destiny, the issue of slavery became the center of politics. The cause of such political and social chaos was the fact that the Constitution had not specifically addressed the issue of slavery and what was to be done about it. It’s consequences were that the nation had felt it’s repercussions years later.…
The Missouri Compromise of 1820 brought Missouri into America as a slave state and Maine as a free state. Everything above the Louisiana Purchase Boundary line, with the exception of Missouri, banned slavery. This action resulted in maintaining an equal representation for both the North and the South in the Senate. Following this, the Compromise of 1850 allowed California to be admitted as a free state, however popular sovereignty would be used in the land of the Mexican Cession. This caused controversy within the states.…
The Missouri compromise was passed in 1820, which regulated slavery in the western states that were gained through the Louisiana purchase. This compromise contributed to the division between the north and south regarding the issue of slavery. Slavery was not allowed in anywhere north of the 36:30 parallel, but the state of Missouri allowed slavery. Fortunately, the compromise made many Americans happy and without the compromise the inevitable civil war would have occurred sooner. But unfortunately, the happiness of the country was ruined when the Missouri compromise got repealed.…
