The National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), is a system made by the US and is controlled by the FBI, in which there is a process of examining a name of a person who is interested in buying a gun where they undergo federal and state criminal records to see if they are ineligible and are possibly unable to purchase a gun. Federal law also puts a stop to the selling of weapons to people who have been convicted of a felony, have a warrant out for their arrest, have used drugs within the past year, were committed involuntarily to a mental institution or ruled mentally incompetent by a judge, are living in the U.S. illegally, have a domestic-violence-related restraining order against them or have a misdemeanor domestic violence conviction. People who were dishonorably discharged from the military or who have renounced their U.S. citizenship are also barred from gun purchases. (Goodwin) This background check is handy and accommodating for people everywhere who can live in peace knowing criminals are not given a right to guns because of past errors. Veronica Rutledge, who alongside of her husband is very much familiar with guns as they hunt and practice at shooting ranges. Her husband had the idea to give her a gun for the purpose that it would serve her a sense of protection if she were to ever need it. Veronica had placed the gun in her purse that she thought could conceal her weapon, but was sadly mistaken when her two year old son unknowingly opened the compartment of her purse and shot his mother in the head. Another unfortunate event that happened was the shooting disturbance that occurred December 14, 2012 in Connecticut at Sandy Hook Elementary school. Twenty year old Adam Lanza who is said by police to have shot his mother, Nancy Lanza, then after drove to his mother 's work where she happened to teach kindergarten. As he entered the school, he had killed six adults, one of them involving the school’s principal and twenty children. This shooting is said to become the second-deadliest in U.S. history.
