During the debates a number of misrepresentations about the muslim faith have been brought up like the oppression of women, the meaning of Jihad, and the role of sharia law. These confusions have brought the muslim world to the verge of implosion but it can be corrected through reformation of sharia law and correcting misinterpreted verses in the Qur’an by scholars.
One of the most controversial topics and most distorted topics when discussing the Qur’an and its verses is the role of women and if they are truly being oppressed. There are a number of suras in Islam that have been used to oppress women and the Saudi Kingdom have promoted these fabrications of these verses to promote wahhabism. The main topic of these discussions is the dress code of women and why they cover themselves up with an hijab or burqa. In the arabic language hijab has many meanings some mean divider,curtains, and of course veil or headscarf. In the Qur’an it mentions the word hijab numerous times but never does it mention it in its modern age meaning which is the veil or headscarf. Most of the discussion of women’s dress code is discussed in sura 24:31; in this sura it tells women that, “They shall cover their cleavage with their khimar”,within the arabic language they’re many different meanings for the same word. In an american dictionary when you open it up you find that jihad means a holy war waged by muslims. Jihad means struggle in arabic. There are different forms of jihad but the main ones are the Greater Jihad to the Lesser Jihad. The Jihad of the soul is the greater Jihad because it is always ongoing, and the lesser Jihad, and the most known is the Jihad of the sword. It is the lesser Jihad because it is limited in nature and only can happen under specific conditions. Jihad of the soul, greater jihad, means the inner struggle against evil and sin; it’s goal is to allow islam to change your life so you can have inner peace. This isn’t the type of jihad that is promoted in the western media. The controversial part and most known in the western world is the lesser jihad or the jihad by the sword. This jihad refers to a struggle through combat and is a necessary part of islam. The only time a lesser jihad can be taken is through self defense or when you're fighting against evil or see acts that are unjust. The only time a muslim government can wage a war or jihad by the sword is if they are being attacked and are being invaded. A muslim can not do pre emptive strikes or have any collateral damages.
