Pedagogical Approach: I realize that the online learning experience is quite different from face-to-face classes and that it can be very isolating. To cope with this problem, I reach out to my students by involving them in group activities and by communicating with them on a daily basis. For example, I have done extensive research on medical metaphors and find that they are a significant part of doctor/patient and doctor/doctor communication. Although I concentrated on metaphors in the television series House, M.D. in my dissertation, there is a connection between metaphor usage in this fictional story and in the real world of medicine. I posit that by helping nursing students understand how effectively metaphors can be used in the medical field, they gain better communication skills which would make them better candidates for jobs in medicine.
