And it refers to the Liesel’s family and their relationships with each other and how they treat Max,who is Jew. The scene in the movie when Rosa, Liesel’s stepmother, tells to her husband to get away from Max, as he is a big danger for them, but Hans doesn’t agree with her as he remembers that Max’s father saved his life once, and at this point Hans has to help Max to be hidden and to survive. Also Liesel’s relationship to the books, is symbolised by development from a powerless girl to an empowered young lady. However, it’s not the book themselves that are symbolic, but how Liesel relate to them, their relationship. The first connection of Liesel to the books was at her brother’s funeral. The scene takes a place at the spacecraft, the close up was on the book, that the priest dropped by accident. The close up on the book, while Liesel is picking it up, but she doesn’t give it back to him, she keeps and hides it. In the same scene, it’s picture of the snow, creates the sadness, painful and darkness of the moment, as it was her brother funeral. Back to the connection of book and Liesel, the quote “Liesel: Is that your book?. Max: it wasn’t always mine. ” , evidens the connection and relationship between Max, Liesel and books. The use of the dialogues, helps responders to catch and find this connection and it is seen in the scene, when Liesel says the exactly same phrase to Hans, when he asks her if the book that she stole at the funeral is her. Moreover, Liesel and Rudy’s friendship would suggest about the humanity, and how to stay who you are and be strong when the most of people are cruel and dishonest.
