The largest side effect that adult children experience is the feeling of loss and betrayal. It might come to them as a shock, because they thought their parents were happy together. Most of this occurs when they are about to leave home and attend college. It has also been seen that when a parent begins to start a new relationship with an individual it tends to get difficult for the child to understand it. Some adult children may try to isolate themselves from an individual parent due to externalizing the issue (Sumner 2013). Most adult children who had an experience with divorce will express a distance from the individual parent. Rhyne 1990, explains that most adult children report their feelings of anger towards the father rather than their mothers. Since most children have a larger amount of affection towards their mothers and feel the sorrow that they are experiencing. Some mothers experience trauma as well through a divorce, which results in the adult children becoming more than willing to support and care for their divorced or remarried mothers. On the other hand, fathers do not have that true connection with their adult children and are not as likely to receive the care that they wish they could. Children who go through such a traumatic experience like divorce on the family is really tough on the younger children. Though they may not understand the reasoning behind the separation, but not seeing their family together and happy is rough. When Adam went through the divorce of his family it took time for him to fully understand what his parents went through. Sometimes he still is trying to process the idea of what caused their divorce. If Max and Stephanie looked into getting counseling, prior to the divorce it may not have been such a surprise to him. Hopefully, as Adam gets older he will begin to realize when he is in relationships and when he gets married that he prepare and learn that divorce hurts everyone including the parents. The best thing that Adam can do is try to be in search of counseling that way he has someone he can talk to, when things get rough and talking it out will help the
