Curley 's wife is constantly lonely and always looking for boys to be around to keep her company, but she 's very flirty and Curley is protective. Curley 's wife walks in the barn and finds Lennie playing with the pups, so she decides to talk to him, but Lennie isn 't supposed to and she gets frustrated. She questions Lennie, “Why can 't I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody. I get off of lonely….You can talk to people, but I can 't talk to nobody but Curley. Else he gets mad. How do you like not to talk to anybody?” (86-87) Why Curley 's wife is so lonely is because she 's never around anybody besides Curley, but he doesn 't even pay attention to her and it makes her sad and depressed but also frustrated. All she ever wants to do is talk to people because she even says that she gets awful lonely, and someone shouldn’t get lonely when there 's tons of people around, that 's just sad. Next, Lennie and Curley 's wife were still in the barn but she was being too friendly, let him play with her hair, and she was shrieking so Lennie got scared and snapped her neck. She was saying, “Here---feel right here….Look out you’ll muss it…. She struggled violently under his hands….And then she was still, for Lennie had broken her neck” (91). It not only appears to be with just the three characters, many of the other characters are involved in the theme of loneliness.
Searching for companionship the key characters tried to succeed but as described they failed and were unable to reach success. Even though the story was placed long ago, there 's still tons of people today being mistreated and lonely and desperate for friends and someone to talk to. Just because our century got more updated and hip, doesn’t mean racism, abuse, depression, and loneliness went away, it is all still here just maybe not as noticed as it should
