John Steinbeck was born on February 27, 1902 in Salinas, California. At a young age Steinbeck showed a strong interest and love for writing. Steinbeck used to work later into the night in his attic room. He went to college on and off for five years. He ended up leaving Stanford without even earning his degree. The one thing he did receive while going to college is many friends and acquaintances that would influence his writing tremendously. After leaving Stanford’s English program he enrolled in Hopkins Marine Station to study biology. Steinbeck wrote many books throughout his life time. In 1967 he even traveled to Vietnam to report on the war for Newsday. Steinbeck supported the Vietnam War due to his sons serving overseas. In 1962 Steinbeck was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature for his “realistic and imaginative writing combining as it does sympathetic humor and social perception.” Also Lyndon B. Johnson awarded Steinbeck with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Lennie feels lonely at many times throughout the novel “if you don’t want me I can go off in the hills an find a cave. I can go away anytime” This expresses loneliness because Lenni offers to leave and George never lets him leave no matter how many things Lennie has messed up. Another example is that George is lonely and wants a women. “I can get along so easily and so nice if I didn’t have you on my tail” George tries to find a girlfriend and he can never because he always has lennie with him, but he doesn 't want to leave Lennie and be alone during that time. Next Candy’s wife just wants attention from anyone. “She put her hands behind her back and leaned against the door frame so her body was was thrown forwards” While Candy is busy working she goes and finds anyone who will give her attention because she is alone. Furthermore Curly had the dog to long, but it was the only family he had. “no I couldn’t do that I had in too long” Curly has no family, the closest thing to family he has is his dog, once he gets rid of his dog he is completely
