Aloysius believes that doubt is the diminishing of belief. This is relative to a very religious view of doubt, and prefaced by Father Flynn’s sermon. Doubt is not something to be ashamed of, as exhibited by Sister James. This caused her to question the validity of Aloysius claims. Doubt accompanies every decision, whether spiritual or relational. Doubt causes us to stop and reevaluate what we truly believe. Aloysius discovered that there will always be doubt in the ending scene when she questions if Father Flynn was truly in the wrong. Doubt is something that causes us to bond with others who have similar doubts or strong beliefs in one thing. As the curtain falls, we are shocked about the sudden confession of the staunchest belief in the play.
