The Red Cross
For nearly a century and a half one organization has been aiding civilians as well as soldiers across the globe. The Red Cross started as merely an idea that shifted quickly into a movement to help both sides of battles to insure that both sides received attention …show more content…
This battle was witnessed by a young Swedish businessman by the name of Henri Dunant who then organized people from nearby villages to come bring food, water and other supplies to help the wounded and sick soldiers. This gave Dunant the idea of having trained non-combat volunteers to give aid to wounded from both sides. This then sparked a movement in which the Public Welfare Association in Geneva, for a five-man committee that Dunant and Gustave Moynier, the president of the association and the committee, were active participants. However, Dunant’s financial problems had caught up to him whenever he had joined the committee he recklessly paid little attention to his own business. According to Richard Cavendish, “Dunant had spent far more time on the Red Cross than on business and in 1867 he went bankrupt…” (qtd. in Richmand 10). Dunant being the head figure of the Red Cross movement is rather forgotten despite winning a nobel Peace Prize in 1901. (“Henry
