Feminism is an interdisciplinary approach through a diverse variety of beliefs, ideas, movements, and
agendas for action, in which the advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and
economic equality to men are implemented.
The first stage of feminism took place in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, emerging out of an
environment of urban industrialism and liberal, socialist politics. The goal of this first stage was to open
opportunities for women focusing on the right to vote.
The second stage began in the 1960s and continued into the 90s. This stage outstretched in the wake of

The women of the third wave
stepped onto the stage as strong and empowered, eschewing victimization and defining feminine
beauty for themselves as subjects, not as objects of a sexist patriarchy.
” The feminist movement also helped to transform family structures as a result of these increased
rights, in that gender roles and the division of labor within households have gradually become
more flexible.”

Feminism is always evolving in the United States as advocacy for equality continues and new
issues arise. What will be a new silhouette emerging on the horizon and taking the shape of a
fourth stage/wave of feminism?
