When people heard about this idea they laughed. They thought thought that it would never be possible. Soon, the idea was ignored. But, during the gold rush in 1849, thousands of people traveled to California to settle the region and hunt for gold. The journey to the west was far to difficult and long. People soon realized that in deed they needed a Transcontinental Railroad. There was a bridge built across the Mississippi that a train would cross. There were still many places that needed railroads to shorten the journey. In 1853, Jefferson Davis, the U.S. Secretary of War, sent army engineers to find a land route for a transcontinental railroad. There was land found but there were many problems. The North and South bickered over where the railroad was built. There were several different men that decided to build the railroad going to the West and to the East. During the time of construction, there were some difficulties. There were many tall mountains in the way of the tracks path. The workers had to blow tunnels in the rock with dynamite. This was very dangerous and many people got killed. Also, during the winter the snow was a problem. Many men were killed in avalanches. After many, many years, they reached California.
