The first play we read was Euripides’s Cyclops. This play was a humorous, gory, crude, and somewhat childish, which I believe made it easy to follow the story line. An example of the crudeness in the play is all the satyrs are wearing phalluses. I also think this type of writing appeals to modern society as people now tend to enjoy movies, TV shows, etc. of this nature. Another reason for the ease of understanding plays is because the large amount of dialog between characters. Dialog has a great way of painting a picture in our heads, especially when reading a play, because the tone is often set in the script. The other play I had an easy time reading was Trifles. The reason I had such an easy time reading and gaining meaning from this story was because it was a more modern play. It was very easy for me to see how the writer emphasized the inequality between men and women, because of the way the men talked to the women and the responsibilities they gave them. This is shown when Mr. Hale says “…women are used to worrying over trifles” (P.76), and when the men have the women investigate the quilt and the sewing kit (a very unlikely place to find evidence). One last reading I found easy to comprehend was the poem by Sara Teasdale, titled “The Kiss”. This poem was a very short, yet extremely relevant and deep. Some of these readings were poems and one was “The Tale of Genji”. Some of this poetry included the poems of Emma Lazarus. The reason these poems did not appeal me is that they were hard to interpret and very dry. I remember, after reading the poems for the first time, I did not understand any concepts that Lazarus was conveying through her literature. As I said before, poetry to me is too complicated and in order for me to appreciate poetry, I like to have a sense of what I am reading, and for most of Lazarus’s poems, I was not able to grasp her meanings. Another piece of literature I did not particularly like was “The Tale of Genji”, because of the theme of the story. The setting and story did not draw me in and from the beginning I had trouble following the story line. Although these stories and poems were not my favorite, I still enjoyed getting a better introduction to these types of literature and trying to understand
