In Cold Blood was a story which shook the nation. Describing the gruesome murders of the Clutter family, Truman Capote appeals to his readers’ emotions and plays on their empathy. As the story progresses, Capote’s focus changes. His purpose for writing this book seems to shift. He got emotionally invested in the characters, and that determined which direction the story went. Capote has a way of manipulating his readers into supporting his purpose. Their view of the characters is altered along with the purpose. One becomes attached to certain characters, such as Capote did when he was writing the story. As the investigation progresses, the storyline changes to accommodate one’s feelings.
