The FSIS comprises of the Federal Meat, Poultry Products and the Egg Products Inspection Act, and these acts require that all meat, poultry, and processed egg products prepared for distribution in commerce for human consumption must be inspected and regulated by a federal officer. FSIS also institutes and verifies compliance in accordance with the Humane Methods of Slaughtering Act for livestock, which is mandated through the Federal Meat Inspection Act. In these efforts to protect the safety and integrity of meat and poultry products, the FSIS also works with many other agencies, within the USDA, State inspection programs, the Food and Drug Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the Environmental Protection Agency (usda.gov, 2008).
