The Politics behind Consequences and Concern of the United States Border Closing
There is much controversy on whether or not to close the borders, but would the benefits outweigh the consequences? People close down borders to try to push the negative forces out for safety. To push out attacks and illegal transactions of drugs and people, closing the borders does seem like a good idea. However, while the act of closing borders means to isolate ourselves from the influence of others, it also means to cut ties with countries around the globe. When one has allies the more power and influence they are able to take. With treaties, countries have a web of alliances that creates a situation where if one is bothered, all the other countries are too. History has its ways with political diplomatic treaties with other nations that helped support nations. On September 12, 2001, the day after the 9/11 bombing, the 19 ambassadors of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization all agreed that by attacking the United States, it meant it was attacking all of its other member nations (History.com). Not only did they give pressure to those attacking any member of the NATO treaty to help America, they also sent military support of 5 airplanes to watch American airspace further helping the border and security in general. Coming back to more recent times in Obama’s immigration announcement, he stresses the efforts to keep the U.S. borders safe and in 2014, nearly 20,000 U.S PDF (Border Patrol agents) now operate on the Southwestern borders (Renwick). The Secure Our Borders First Act also adds strictness to the DHS (Department of Homeland Security) by penalizing senior officials that fail to successfully intercept a certain number of crossings (Renwick).
