Early years of reading instruction are crucial because success or failure during these years is a strong predictor of later success. For example, Cunningham and Stanovich (1997) examined reading skills of first graders, and ten years later, they reached half of the same students and administered their reading abilities. They discovered that first grade reading skill had significant influence on the 11th grade reading ability. Therefore, reading problems should be solved during the early years. Phonemic awareness and letter-sound relationships have to be mastered at the beginning of reading instructions, and Visual Phonics can be used to teach these skills. Students and the teachers were familiar with the Visual Phonics that had been instructed for at least one and a half years. At the beginning of the study, the author created the hypotheses that there was a positive correlation between Visual Phonics with phonological awareness and decoding tasks. All students, who participated in this study, completed tests with greater than the chance performance scores that was also above the average of d/Dhh students reading
