-Seth Siegel, author of Let There Be Water INTRO For human life to proceed, water is required, but its accessibility is lacking and will worsen unless water is managed differently. According to the World Wildlife Fund, 1.1 billion people worldwide do not have freshwater at hand, and 2.7 billion face insufficient freshwater for over a month each year. It is crucial for society to be aware of this issue because water is being managed poorly. The British Broadcasting Corporation states that within the past 40 years, global water consumption has quadrupled, despite the population doubling. If this is not adverse to …show more content…
The Water Project states that 70% of freshwater consumption derives from agriculture and irrigation. Uses within homes such as drinking and washing hands only comprise 10%. The broad picture of freshwater being consumed centers on how agriculture increases demand. If water is wastefully used, the effects are gargantuan. Jerry Brown, the governor of California asserted that California is “in a new era of drought severity.” The Pacific Institute states that 80% of the water usage in California comes from agriculture. Regulations on at home water usage placed on the people of California are an unnecessary burden, while agriculture requires substantially more water. The water directly accumulated in activities including hand washing and showering, is relatively miniscule. The United States geological survey states that 128 billion gallons of water were withdrawn in the US for irrigation in the year 2005. 19% of that came from California. It is no coincidence that the state most renowned for it’s water crisis leads the nation in withdrawn
