First year psychology students participated in this assessment as a course requirement, there was 268 (182 females and 86 males) in total.
Design
The design was a questionnaire completed in the student’s tutorial on a PC.
There are three tests used in this study. The cognitive reflections test assesses differences in cognitive reflection. Cognitive reflection has been linked to lengthier deliberation and the ability to reject the intuitive but incorrect responses (Frederick, 2005). The metaphors test measures an individuals’ ability to discern emotional language, because of the emotional basis, it is considered attributed to emotional intelligence (Barchard, Hensley, Anderson, & Walker, 2013). The metaphors test, consisting of ten metaphors, is designed measure a person 's ability to perceive emotional content within written communication. Using a five point Likert scale, ranging from 'not at all ' to 'extreme ', participants indicated the degree to which each metaphor evoked three emotions.

The SDO7 measures differences in the degree to which individuals believe that society should be hierarchical and that their ingroup should be dominant within this hierarchy.
The scale consists of 16 items to which participants indicated their responses using a seven point Likert scale ranging from strongly agree to strongly disagree. In the current study reliability for the SDO scale was high, with an alpha level of .89.

The metaphors and cognitive reflection results display a negative correlation; the further the test scores decreased, the higher the social dominance orientation scale increased.
