Title IX and Women’s Sports
According to Chanan Tigay 's article "Women and Sport," 41 percent of high school athletes across the nation are females. The number of women playing sports has increased by 10 times since 1972 for multiple reasons. But the main reason is Title IX. This educational amendment enforces gender equality in any educational program, sports, student housing and federal assistance. Title IX has greatly improved the equality of women 's sports and brought vast amounts of attention to women 's sports.

The Faith Christian School in Arizona forfeited a game against Foothills Academy Prep because the boys’ soccer team had two girls playing on it. The reason that Faith Christian gave USA Today sports was "It is based on a religious perspective that God created guys and girls differently. The difference physically, there is a strength advantage that men have over women. We want to teach our men to honor of ladies is just not in sports." This issue is also the plot of the movie She 's The Man that was released in 2006. The movie is about a girl who wants to prove that she is talented and strong enough to play on the boys’ soccer team. Amanda Bynes, the main character, is denied the opportunity to play at her school so she disguises herself as her twin brother, and try out for the boy 's team at his private school. In the end, Amanda Bynes proves that she and soccer team should be allowed to try-out for the boys team.
A third example of gender discrimination in sports is the amount of TV coverage. One of the major positive outcomes in women’s sports is the increase amount of opportunities for females to play sports whether it’s when it’s they are a child, in high school, in college, or professionally. The number of opportunities for women has increased by almost 4 million since 1971. Another outcome of a positive effect is the amount of women’s athletic events being broadcast on TV or YouTube. TV networks like ESPN, NBC, Fox Sports, and NBCSN have been broadcasting college softball games, college and professional gymnastics, soccer, and basketball, professional tennis, and ice skating. Some of the slowly developing outcomes that are currently being talked about in the news are safer playing conditions for women and equal pay for professional women athletes.
There are a few negative effects that Title IX has caused in men’s sports. One of these negative effects is the increase safety risk by having a female in a game with a bunch of males. Another negative effect of Title IX is the decrease of privacy in the locker rooms for professional sports teams.
