Have you ever thought about how much a speech can change the course of a war? War’s can tear a nation apart or they can make a nation come together. The Civil war, tore North America into two different teams, the Union (North) and the Confederates (South). The Union was anti-slavery while the Confederates were pro-slavery. The Civil war was a war that people will never forget, and completely changed America’s views. Writing helped people give meaning and make sense of the Civil war through.

On November 19, 1863, Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address, at the National Cemetery in Gettysburg. Around 15,000 people attended the speech (Abraham Lincoln Delivers). The Gettysburg Address was not a lengthy speech and was only 272 words (Gettysburg Address). Even though the speech was very short, it influenced a great number of people. The main idea of the speech was equality. A quote that summed up the whole speech was “Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation... dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” This quote shows that the founding fathers made this new nation dedicated to the fact that everyone was created equal, and should not be treated differently due to their race.
