The most common solution to problems in the American government is to implement taxes. This happened with the tobacco industry and now it is being proposed again, but this time it’s directed towards the food industry. Mark Bittman’s article “Bad Food? Tax it, and Subsidize Vegetables” featured in The New York Times argues that the average American diet is life threatening. The health risks that come with eating over processed food with too much sugar are costly and dangerous.…
Whole Foods Market understands its position in the market and capitalizes on the increasing demand for non-GMO, sustainably-sourced, natural and organic foods and household items. However, WFM also understands the opportunity to expand their generic brand to capture more of the market: “Whole Foods may be the Cadillac of the supermarket industry, but not every customer wants a Cadillac -- and more importantly, not every customer can afford one” (Motley Fool). Whole Foods Market has its own line of products called 365 Everyday Value and Whole Foods Market brand, Engine 2 Plant-Strong products, and Whole Trade Guarantee products. WFM is repositioning their existing businesses in order to give them an opportunity to take back market share from…

According to the FDA, food companies are allowed to say that their food products contains 0 grams of trans fat, as long as one serving contains less than .50 grams of trans fat. However, food companies should not be allowed to hide trans fats like these, as they are unhealthy for our bodies and health. As a spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association Andrea Giancoli states it “Trans fats raise your bad cholesterol just like saturated fats, but they also increase inflammation and lower the good cholesterol that protects us against heart disease.” ( MacMillan, 2009) The problem with this is that a lot a people consume more than one serving of all types of foods, and because the serving sizes have not changed since the 80’s when people ate less than we do now.…
Fruit is high in antioxidants, and it’s cleansing, but it’s also high in sugar, and sugar is cancer’s staple. Cancer cells are junkies that scarf up all available sugar to support their glucose-dependent anaerobic requirements. Do not eat sweets, including honey and other natural sweeteners while you’re starving your cancer. Use xylitol as a healthy, natural sweetener with no nasty after taste.…

I could use critical thinking in nutrition class through making educated guesses to test questions or while studying the material to understand it beyond what it only states and figuring out why the author writes that food is more complicated today than it ever has been from the nutrition textbook. First, I would scan the section of the nutrition book on why food is complicated today and see what the author is going to be explaining, the main points, the topic, and the first paragraph to give me a hint on what the text will be mostly about. Second, I would ask myself questions that relate to the topic to see what the topic will be about and write them down to see if I can answer them later after I have read the text. While reading the text,…
Over the course of this class, I have learned quite a bit about what it takes to actually eat healthy and take care of my body. Coming into this class, I thought that I had already figured out most of what I had needed to know. Very quickly, I started to realize that there is a whole lot more to eating healthy than I had thought. Being as health conscious as I am, I immediately found the class very interesting, as it is one of the only classes that I have ever taken that can actually be applied to life on the daily. That is why I found the “My Diet Analysis” project to be extremely interesting.…
Food discourse online community are a group of people who are very opinionated about food and share online recipes with one another. What I found was that people online compare recipes as well as restaurants based on personal experiences. Sometimes these comments under the sites blog can get pretty reckless. When people don't agree they tend to get messy by disrespecting each other online which some may consider as cyber bullying depending the case. But these online food sites are created so people find a place to find comfort, because when people are depressed or sad eating or the viewing of food makes them feel better.…

Food Inc. is a documentary that given an in depth look at the types of food that we eat every day. The film starts with the mention that there are no seasons in a supermarket because fruits and vegetables are available year round thanks to GMOs. GMOs makes the food grow faster while at the same time keeping pests away. While this may seem fine, fruits and vegetables can lose their rich flavor and color, which then makes them not as delicious. But because GMO grown goods are much cheaper than organic, people end up buying the GMOs.…
The concept of healthy food The concepts of healthy food vary but they share many similarities in nutrition consumption principles. For example, “healthy foods provide an individual with a balanced diet that meets national dietary guidelines and provides plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat dairy products and healthy fats like olive and canola oil and protein, such as lean meats and legumes.” (Access to Healthy Foods Coalition in Washington, Washington State Department of Health and Center for Public Health Nutrition, 2010, p. 2)…
