During recent elections the Second Amendment was at the center of many political debates. Anti-gun politicians used the horrible examples of recent school shootings and terrorist acts such as the Florida night club shooting to scare people into increasing gun control. On the other hand, pro-Second Amendment politicians used scare tactics of losing the right to bear arms and the fear to not be able to fight if need be, to try to win votes. A deeper understanding of the arguments of both sides is critical to reaching an opinion and voters must research beyond the surface arguments provided by both sides. Dennis Henigan reviews the bumper sticker arguments that the National Rifle Association supporters quote and use as the center of their debates in his book, ‘Guns Don’t Kill People, People Kill People.’ And Other Myths About Guns and Gun Control. Hennigan believes the arguments of pro-gun lobbyist can be defined by their bumper stickers; “Guns don’t kill people. People kill people; When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns; and An armed society is a polite society.”
David Hardy’s article “Why Gun Owners are Right to Fight Against Gun Control” argues that anti-gun lobbyists are proposing gun control legislation that leaves no room for compromise. He also explains that the many bans of weapons, such as assault weapons or sniper rifles will lead slowly but surely to total prohibition. Hardy believes that the gun control lobby is on a mission to wipe out gun ownership entirely.
