INTRO TO NUTRITION

WHAT IS NUTRITION? When I hear the word “nutrition”, what comes to mind is nutrients. In other words, nutrition is related to nutrients. In my own understanding, nutrition is the study of nutrients that we consume, how those nutrients help our bodies when taken in right proportions, and how they can harm our bodies when taken in excess. Nutrition helps our understanding of the chemicals in our foods. Nutrition helps us as individuals to check and balance our diet. In addition, when I hear nutrition, I imagine healthy foods. I believe studying nutrition helps individuals make healthy choices regarding their diet. What is Nutrition? Nutrition is the science of foods and the nutrients and the other substances they contain, and of their actions within the body which may include ingestion, digestion, absorption, transport, metabolism, and excretion (Whitney & Rolfes, 2011). …show more content…
According to an article on healthypeople.gov, access to healthier foods can help people follow healthy diets. For example, access to affordable healthy foods would have a positive impact on a person’s diet especially for low-income earners and rural neighbourhoods. I have noticed that there are quite a number of black obese people in Edmond. Some of them I’ve seen do not really look kept; they work at a fast food place so their pay is not that high, which leads them to choose unhealthy. Also in Nigeria, low income earners are prone to choosing unhealthy foods because they cannot afford the healthy foods. The places where people eat influence their diet as well. For example, foods eaten away from home often have more calories than foods prepared at home. For foods prepared at home, one can easily cook it to one’s satisfaction and control the amount of spices put into them.
