One underlying cause of WWI was the formation of alliances. The two opposing alliances consisted of the Allies and the Central Powers. Germany, Serbia, Italy and Austria-Hungary were part of the Triple Alliance which was the core of the central powers. Also, Russia, France and the United Kingdom were part of the Triple Entente, which was the core of the allies. (Document A) These two groups of countries had promises of support between each other. The most important alliance was Germany helping Austria Hungary no matter what, in a promise called the blank check. After the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Austria Hungary retalleed against Serbia with the support of Germany. Since they were competing for land, they would often get mad over the fact that other countries had more. In document E, it shows a map and lines (paths) leading to Great Britain. This is trying to say that England was going to take over, because of their big territory of land, also shown in Document F.
