What is the 'One Child Policy'?
-Introduced in the 1970s as the Chinese government realised the country was heading for famine
-In China, couples can only have 1 child
-Reduce the rapid increasing population
What changes were made in the policy in the 1990s and 2000s?
-Young couples who are only children are allowed two children
-Government workers are still allowed one child
-Women have more time to focus on careers
-People are able to pay fines and handle the consequences of breaking the rules as wealth increases
What are the problems associated with the policy?
-Gender balance / More males than females / Hard to find partners in the future
-Chinese tradition state when people get married, the couples moves with the male's parents to look after them
-Baby girls were less wanted so theh were left out or on the streets
-Women forced to have abortion as late as the 9th month of pregnancy
-'Little Emperor Syndrome' developed as the child was spoilt
