Did you know sixty-four hurricanes have hit Texas? Hurricanes are categorized from one to five, five being the worst. Centers of hurricanes known as the eye, are considered calmer than the rest of the storm. Many hurricanes are considered dangerous. Here in this paper it will explain the 1900 Galveston Hurricane, Hurricane Ike and Hurricane Harvey.
One of the deadliest disasters in American history occurred in Galveston, Texas. Known as the 1900 Galveston Hurricane, it hit land on September 8th, 1900. The Weather Bureau predicted that the storm was going to pass over Florida and go up the East Coast. Their prediction was incorrect and the City of Galveston was completely surprised by the storm. Recorded as a category four storm, it was considered major. Wind speeds went up to 135 mph and there was a fifteen-foot storm surge. Galveston was flooded, over 3,600 buildings were destroyed and 6,000 to 8,000 people lost their lives. Impacts of this storm led to the building of the Galveston Sea Wall to help keep the city from flooding. On September 13, 2008, a hurricane named Ike hit land near Galveston, TX. This category two storm was considered the most powerful storm from the Atlantic Ocean in 2008. As the storm travelled towards Texas, it crossed several countries along the way. Ike had max wind speeds of 110 mph but its last minute change of direction saved Houston from a category five storm surge. Damages from Ike included loss of power and loss of homes. Bolivar-Peninsula was among one of the worst hit areas, where the storm surge reached fifteen to seventeen feet. Total damage was around $37.6 billion and many lives were lost. Hurricane Ike caused severe damage but more hurricanes have affected Texas since Ike’s
